What are Meta Tags?

According to the World Wide Web Consortium, “Meta data is machine understandable information for the Web."  Basically, Meta tags are used to describe or define content on a Web page.

Meta tags are used to help search engines index Web pages; however, simply including a meta tag is not a guarantee that your Web page will suddenly leap to the top of every search engine listing. Meta Tags are an important tool for search engine placement – but not a magic solution.

To increase the chances that clients and prospects will find your Web site using one of the major search engines (Alta Vista, Excite, Hot Bot, Infoseek, and Web Crawler all support meta tags), A Figure of Speech, Inc. adds meta descriptions and keywords to your Web code (this is only read by the search engine's robots and can't be seen by site visitors unless they view your page source).

Because Meta tags include a description of your company (one to two sentences) and keywords related to your business (5-20 keywords), most of our clients want to be directly involved with the development of their meta tags.  We have made this process quick and simple for our clients by designing an online form to help them write the description and keywords that best fits their business while fulfilling the requirements for getting their site indexed with the major search engines.

Please click here to access this online form (filling it out will help us make your site more accessible by people who use search engines to find information on the Internet)!

Please note that meta tags and search engine placement is not an exact science; therefore, the results can not be guaranteed.  For more information on how search engines work, please click here.
